FAQ About Dog & Cat Ultrasound Services

An ultrasound helps identify changes in your pet’s internal organs. It’s used to detect tumors, cysts, fluid buildup, inflammation, and many other internal conditions.
The cost of an ultrasound can vary depending on the area being imaged and whether sedation is needed.
Truss Vet provides pet ultrasound services in Cary, NC, serving nearby communities.
Outpatient ultrasounds at Truss Vet are typically scheduled through a referral from your primary veterinarian. If you don’t have a primary vet, simply give us a call — we can see your pet through an urgent care visit and then coordinate their ultrasound appointment.
Yes, in most cases, we ask that pets fast for 8–12 hours before their ultrasound. A full stomach can interfere with imaging, particularly when examining abdominal organs. For diabetic pets, we may adjust the fasting protocol to ensure stable blood sugar levels.
Yes, continue administering regular medications as prescribed unless instructed otherwise. If your vet recommends an anti-anxiety medication, we’ll guide you on when and how to give it before the appointment.
Yes — to ensure clear imaging, the fur around the ultrasound area will be shaved in the clinic. This allows the ultrasound probe to make direct contact with the skin for the most accurate results.
If your pet’s medical records haven’t already been sent, please bring them with you. Having your pet’s recent history and lab work helps our radiologist interpret the ultrasound more accurately.
Most ultrasound appointments at Truss Vet are drop-off to allow our team enough time for a thorough exam. However, you’re welcome to wait in the clinic if you prefer — just let us know when scheduling.
Most pets stay for 1–2 hours, depending on the type of ultrasound and whether sedation is needed.
Most pets do not require sedation. However, for anxious or uncomfortable pets, mild sedation may be used to help them relax and remain still. If sedation is recommended, our team will discuss this with you beforehand.
Most ultrasounds take 30–60 minutes, and results are typically sent to your veterinarian within 24 hours.
Once the procedure is complete:

Our board-certified radiologist reviews and interprets the images and writes a report.

The results are shared with your primary veterinarian, who will go over the findings and next steps with you.

Pets can usually eat and drink normally afterward, unless sedation was used — in which case, our team will provide specific aftercare instructions.
In most cases, your primary veterinarian will receive a detailed report from our board-certified radiologist within 24 hours of your pet’s appointment.
