The Best Dog-Friendly Walking Trails in Wilmington, NC

Wilmington, North Carolina, is a genuine, tail-wagging destination that welcomes dogs of all shapes and sizes. With a beautiful coastal landscape and abundant green spaces, the area offers plenty of opportunities for you and your furry best friend to get some exercise and enjoy nature.

If you are looking to leash up and hit the trails, here is a guide to some of the best dog-friendly walking paths in and around Wilmington!

1. Greenfield Lake Park Trail

Widely known as one of the best pet-friendly spots in town, Greenfield Lake Park is a stunning 250-acre park featuring gorgeous gardens and plenty of shaded areas. The trail system offers somewhere between 3.9 and 5 miles of pathways, making it a wonderful adventure around the lake. The trails are mostly paved asphalt, concrete, or wooden boardwalks, making for a smooth and easy stroll.

2. Halyburton Park

For a quick getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city, head over to Halyburton Park. Here, you and your leashed companion can enjoy a 1.2 to 1.3-mile paved nature trail that is mostly shaded. There are also a few unpaved paths leading deeper into the preserve. The absolute best part for your pup? The park features a dedicated doggie water fountain to keep them hydrated during your walk!

3. The Downtown Riverwalk

If you prefer urban sights to wooded paths, Historic Downtown Wilmington is a perfect starting point. The scenic Riverwalk is a pet-friendly, paved path that stretches for nearly two miles along the bank of the Cape Fear River. It provides beautiful views, access to historic sites, and runs near charming shops on Market and Front streets.

4. Abbey Nature Preserve

Located just outside the city center, the 67-acre Abbey Nature Preserve offers a beautiful escape into nature. The trails here range from a 1.4-mile loop to 2.4 miles of paths that wind through pine flatwoods and wooded areas. Fido will love the natural surface trails and the boardwalk crossings that take you right over the old mill pond.

5. Pages Creek Park Preserve

If your dog loves the sights and smells of the water, this preserve features a breezy one-mile trail. About half of the path borders a creek and marshland, offering plenty of openings for wildlife viewing. It’s an easy, flat walk, and the trailhead thoughtfully provides dog waste bags and trash cans.

6. New Hanover County Arboretum

For a more manicured walking experience, leash up your pup and stroll through this beautiful 7-acre botanical garden. It showcases a wide variety of plants native to coastal areas and even features a serene Japanese-themed garden. Local pet owners highly rate it as a peaceful place to take their dogs for a walk.

7. Gary Shell Cross City Trail & River to the Sea Bikeway

For the highly active dog, Wilmington offers some fantastic, longer multi-use greenways. The Gary Shell Cross City Trail provides roughly 14 to 15 miles of paved pathways that weave through the city and connect several parks. Alternatively, the River to the Sea Bikeway is a fantastic rail-trail built on an unused railroad corridor that is perfect for walking your dog safely away from traffic.
